  • Added Combined AT&T Wireless/Cingular map showing both Cingular and AT&T Wireless cell sites as they exist today. With the February 17 announced acquisition of AT&T Wireless by Cingular, the map shows likely post-acquisition Cingular cell sites assuming that the acquisition is approved by stockholders and governmental agencies, and that Cingular keeps existing AT&T Wireless cell sites as part of their network.

  • Carrier News...  Cingular To Acquire AT&T Wireless, Create Nation's Premier Carrier
    It is not known at this point if the acquisition will allow GSM phones to utilize the cell sites of both carriers - a total of 56 cell sites serving the Reno/Sparks city limits! A few of the two companies cell sites are co-located, so some consolidation is likely. A hypothetical combined cell site map will be posted soon. More to come on this exciting news for wireless coverage in the Reno area...

bullet New AT&T Wireless cell site at Interstate 80 near Hirschdale/Boca interchange (CID 1252x) - also providing coverage to the Glenshire area of east Truckee. The site is co-located with Cingular and Sprint.
bullet New Nextel site at the SPPCo. substation near Hwy 89 and Squaw Valley Road.
bullet New AT&T Wireless cell site now active at the Burton Creek county offices complex at Burton Creek and Hwy 28 between Tahoe City and Dollar Hill (CID 1313x).
bullet New AT&T Wireless cell site now active near Pioneer Trail and Black Bart Avenue in South Lake Tahoe - just north of the intersection on the existing westernmost AM radio tower (CID 1326x).
bullet Pinpointed the exact location of a Cingular Wireless site constructed in the late 1990's. CID 466x is located on a home at Skyline Blvd. and Clearview Ct. - west of Sunnyside on the west shore of Lake Tahoe.
bullet Pinpointed the exact location of 2 AT&T Wireless cell sites that were constructed late last year and discovered on December 15:
bullet CID 1318 in Tahoma at the El Dorado County Transportation Department yard at Wilson and Harris.
bullet CID 1330 in Carnelian Bay atop the Sierra Boat Company building.

bullet AT&T Wireless has added support for GSM850 phones on at least 7 cell sites in the Reno area. Specifically, cell sites on Peavine Peak, Red Peak, Slide Mountain, Steamboat/S. Reno area, Spanish Springs and 2 cell sites in northeast Sparks now have the ability to use GSM850 during calls.

bullet 3 new AT&T Wireless GSM cell sites confirmed serving the North Lake Tahoe area. CID 1314 is located on the Pepper Tree Inn in downtown Tahoe City. CID 1312 is located near the corner of Hwy. 267 and Speckled in Kings Beach. A third cell site, CID 1321 was identified, but it's exact location is yet unknown. AT&T Wireless maps updated. Dead Zones updated.
bullet A report on October 9 about the existence of a Sprint PCS cell site near the Alpine Meadows Ski Resort is false. There is no coverage in that area at this time, however they have an application pending for a cell site in that area according to public records.

  • Added cell sites in the Verdi area to the total count of cell sites per carrier serving the Reno/Sparks city limits because Verdi recently became annexed into the Reno City limits. This change added 2 cell sites to the total number for AT&T Wireless, Sprint PCS, Cingular/T-Mobile and Verizon. The annexation added 1 cell site to the total number for Nextel, and no additional sites for Cricket since they have no coverage in the Verdi area. Fun fact: The western-most point of the Reno City Limits are now within 1/2 mile of the California/Nevada state border.

bullet New Sprint PCS cell site active at Lake Tahoe above Round Hill / Zephyr Cove. More new cell sites for AT&T Wireless, Nextel and Sprint PCS should be operational by the end of the year according to a recent article in the Tahoe Daily Tribune.
bullet Cricket cell site on Ormbsby House Hotel in Carson City moved across the street to the Nevada Legislature Building, due to building renovations on the Ormbsby House.

• Verizon atop the Reno Hilton, downtown Carson City near or on the old Post Office, 2 approximate locations in S. Lake Tahoe (exact locations are hard to find there due to the trees)
• Cingular on Echo Summit, west of S. Lake Tahoe
• Nextel site thought to exist on McClellan Peak (NE of Carson City) does not exist.
